Occasionally a pipe comes along that challenges our assumptions about shaping conventions. This is one such pipe. It is, in several respects, a quintessential Author. It features the plump proportions characteristic of the shape, including a round, Apple-like bowl and a meaty shank. But prior to seeing this piece, I would have argued that in order to be an Author, the pipe must feature a tapered stem. To which Chris seems to have rejoined, 'Says who?'

Says who, indeed. This fine rendition of the Author features a texturally pleasing sandblast and a fetching accent. In sum, it is a wonderful testament to what I like best about Chris's work: his ability to re-imagine the classic shapes in a way that captures their essential character without ever succumbing to dogma.
