Geiger: Smooth Paneled 'Logo' (Yggdrasil)
Yggdrasil is the highest grade produced by Sara Mossberg and Love Geiger, the Swedish duo who craft Geiger pipes. It's an appropriate, if unusual, designation as the Yggdrasil in Norse Mythology referred to the sacred ash tree that stood at the center of the cosmos where the gods assembled daily.
The shape, like the Blowfish or its forerunner the Disk, is defined primarily by the orientation of the grain, with the side panels showing off lush birdseye and the fore and aft panels highlighting crossgrain. Indeed, what is perhaps most impressive about the pipe is the degree to which the shape conforms to and is defined by the grain's structure while still maintaining a precise symmetry.
Minimalistic, clean, and well proportioned, there's a natural beauty here that Mossberg and Geiger have revealed and accentuated. A close inspection of the piece might lead one to conclude that Odin had the pipe in hand when he referred to Yggdrasil as the 'noblest of trees.'
