J. Alan: Sandblasted Billiard with Ivorite (1471)

Product Number: 002-198-0003

This Sandblasted Billiard represents so much of what is good and interesting in Jeff Gracik's work: first rate engineering, a sense of restraint, and the ability to draw inspiration from Danish and English classics while still pointing toward something new.

The pipe showcases elements of the softness that I associate with Danish classics—the low waistline of the bowl, the rounded rim, and the gentle taper of the shank. Yet the composition is more robust, more muscular than what we might find in the work of one of the Danish masters. The bowl's taper is less pronounced as it moves toward the rim, giving it a sense of firmness. Likewise the oval shank is meatier than what we would expect to find in Danish pipe design. In all of these respects the pipe points toward an aesthetic strain that has become prominent in American pipemaking: a fondness for Danish shaping with a unique, hale and hearty twist.
