Tom Eltang: Sandblasted Elephant's Foot with Bamboo

Product Number: 002-202-0032

Believe it or not, but despite the Elephant's Foot being one of Tom Eltang's more iconic shapes, a sandblasted example is something of a rarity. Well, I guess it's not all that hard to believe. The shape is, after all, one specially designed to show off a specific type of grain pattern, so for it to be almost exclusively the domain of smooth finished pipes more or less follows. In this sandblasted variation though, Tom deftly swaps out a cross cut grain pattern for tightly packed ring grain rising up the panelled cheeks, while the fore and aft of the bowl display an impressive showing of blasted birdseye.

Shaping wise, Tom's Elephant's Foot designs seem to have grown progressively more and more svelte over the years, as the carver has lent less of a pronounced sense of curve to the bowl's fore and aft, coupled with a more subtle sense of taper from rim to heel. This example is especially petite too, though paired to a near-Churchwarden length shank extension comprising of three knuckles of bamboo. The characteristically elongated design is well-served by a more compact bowl here, and it doesn't hurt that the design is as comforting and easy in hand as this one.
