Bill Shalosky: Rusticated Apple (422)

Product Number: 002-216-0006

Even for a carver known for compact, chubby renditions of classic shapes, this rusticated Apple from Bill Shalosky is downright plump. So much so that it feels like the composition should be stagnant, but in typical Bill style that heavy visual weight is used to propel the piece forward from its subtly tapered shank and lithe saddle stem. It shouldn't come as a surprise though, as playing off seemingly antithetical stylistic elements in a way that bolsters both is a mainstay in Bill's aesthetic repertoire.

Somewhat newer though is the finish. Rendered from one of multiple briar blocks that boast over a decades' worth of age in Bill's cellar as he waited for the perfect time and inspiration to carve them, it features a concisely dimpled style of rustication wearing a dark stain, paired to a cumberland stem.
