Lasse Skovgaard: Smooth Bent Apple

Product Number: 002-218-0011

Lasse Skovgaard — the son of renowned pipe maker Benni Jorgensen who started his own pipe making career at the W.Ø. Larsen factory at only 18 — is remarkably talented when it comes to rendering organically inclined shapes, and this bent Apple is an excellent example. It's rife with supple, elegant curves and sinuous, flowing lines, demonstrating the Danish artisan's skilful shaping abilities. The shank is subtly teardrop-esque in shaping, featuring a firm ridgeline along its left side that blends into the base of the bowl significantly closer to the fore than to the resultantly pronounced transition. The bowl's bulging flanks further accentuate its plump disposition before gradually tapering toward the waved rim. Despite the roundness of the bowl, Lasse's rendition of the classic bent Apple utilises its gentle arc and sinuous lines to create here a dynamic piece.

Finished in a warm contrast stain, Lasse has used an English cross-cut orientation to present whorls of birdseye to the left and right of the bowl and shank, while tiger tripes of flame grain dance across the back of the bowl, top of the shank, and all along the underside from fore-rim to the base of the saddle stem.
